Australia’s Shark Net Traps Humpback Calf

On the coast of Coolangatta Beach in Queensland, Australia, a humpback whale calf has been cut free after becoming trapped in a shark net. Mark Saul, a spokesman for Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol states that both the calf and the mother “were very calm”. The Baird government, ignoring expert recommendations, decided to drop its opposition to the installation of shark nets in the state’s northern beaches in response to the increase of shark bites.
